 English Grammar: Modal Auxiliary

Auxiliary Verb:  (सहाय्यकारी क्रियापदे)

Auxiliary verbs are helping verbs which help other verbs to form different tenses.

Types of Auxiliary Verbs:

1.     Primary Auxiliaries:

     Verbs used to form questions, negatives, and tenses are called                             Primary Auxiliaries.
                 

2.    Modal Auxiliaries:

Verbs used to express the mood or attitudes of the speaker like hope, possibility, expectations, probability, permission  necessity and obligation are known as Modal Auxiliaries.



Can:  Possibility, ability, permission 
( शक्यता,सामर्थ्य किंवा परवानगी दर्शविण्यासाठी)
   e.g. 
                1.   I can drive a car                                       (Ability)
              2.   She can speak English.                            (Ability)  
              3.   Can I use your mobile?                           ( Permission)
              4.   India can beat Australia in cricket          ( Possibilit1) 

Examples : 

      1. I shall buy a car next month.        
                                                  (Use modal auxiliary showing ability)

       Ans- I can buy a car next month.

     2) Students may obey their parents.  

                            (Use modal auxiliary showing advice)


      Ans- Students should obey their parents.


     3) Employees should follow company rules.

                             (Use modal auxiliary showing obligation)    
                                                                                                             

     Ans- Employees must follow company rules. 

                                                  
    4) You should do what your teacher tells you.
                               (Use modal auxiliary showing possibility)

     Ans- You might do what your teacher tells you.


   5) He will teach you English next month.
                              (Use modal auxiliary showing less certainty)

     Ans- He may teach you English next month.

   6) Can I Come in?                     (Use modal auxiliary showing permission)

      Ans- May I come in?


    7) Will you give me your mobile?             
                                 (Use modal auxiliary showing request)
       Ans- Could you give me your mobile?


     8) She must attend the English class.      
                                (Use modal auxiliary showing suggestions)

      Ans- She should attend the English class.



    * Ought to: to express Moral obligation ( नैतिक बंधने दर्शिविण्यासाठी) 


       1. We ought to help poor people.

      2.  We ought to love our country.
